United First Class lounge at SFO

After arriving at gate 92, I made way to the United International First Class Lounge (now renamed United Global  First Class Lounge as of March this year) by gate 100 in the international terminal.  It was a quick 5 minute walk from the jet bridge to the lounge.  First order of business was to check in with the lounge dragon attendant and the main lounge was located on the floor below the reception area.

Since it was about 9AM Pacific coast time, the continental breakfast spread was out.  It consisted of sushi, fruits, cereals, pastries/bread, yogurt, and a wide assortment of beverages.  There was not a hot option available (unless one counts broccoli and cheese soup).

The good and bad thing about this lounge is that only First Class passengers are allowed access on an international itinerary (Canada and Mexico are considered “domestic” in this case).  It was good that there were not too many passengers in the lounge at one time and it was pretty quiet (for the most part).  People came in and went for different flights (Seoul, Hong Hong, Tokyo, and Frankfurt) so there was not a big influx of people in the lounge.

At one point, the cleaning woman had the TV turned on to a Spanish Novella and she watched it as she was cleaning.  The only problem with the lounge is that one of the two faucets in the bathroom was not functioning.  Other than that, the lounge was very spacious and definitely better than the one in Chicago.

At about 11 AM, the lunch spread was brought out.  The options included: bread/hummus, more sushi, grilled chicken skewers, cold grilled beef, salmon, pasta salad, and sandwiches/wraps.  Cheese, cookies, nuts, and crackers were always available for enjoyment.  The internet access was pretty good and we had a nice view of the tarmac activity.

For the most part, I got to tied up a few loose ends before I left (putting my Sprint phone account on hold and notifying banks/credit card companies about international travel).  At about 1 PM, my Lufthansa 747-400 plane pulled up and based on the name on the tail fin, D-AIVP (aka ‘Victor Papa’) and it was a new First Configuration with the seat/bed combo.

I knew based on past history online, I had about a 70% chance of getting the new configuration and was excited to get to experience it again. Since the flight showed an on-time departure of 2:40PM, I left the lounge to gate 102 to get a paper boarding card from Lufthansa.  I was notified that I was moved to seat 82H since my seat of 82C was inoperable.

The inbound aircraft was late due to deicing at Frankfurt and a long holding time with arrival into the bay area.  The crew boarded the plane at about 2:10PM and boarding for First Class was at 2:40PM with the boarding process complete at 3PM.  Gotta love efficiency!
